New Balance Fresh Foam X 840F
Read more
In case your neighborhood run gets rained out and you want to hit the gym to get your cardio exercises in, it’s a good idea to keep a go-to pair of treadmill shoes for walking and running in your closet. But with so many different athletic sneaker styles on the market, how can you tell if your shoes are the right choice for running on a treadmill? We talked to a couple of experts in the industry for their tips on finding the best treadmill walking shoes out there.
Meet the Experts: Sarah Pelc Graca, C.P.T., a personal trainer and nutrition coach and Jason Gold, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S., board-certified podiatrist at the Foot, Ankle & Leg Vein Center.
First and foremost, good support is key. “A shoe that provides good support and cushioning will help with running efficiency and minimize the risk of injuries,” says Jason Gold, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S., board-certified podiatrist at the Foot, Ankle & Leg Vein Center.
Additionally, you’ll want to make sure your shoes offer good traction. “Although treadmills provide consistent traction, a shoe with a reliable grip helps ensure stability, especially during high-intensity or speed workouts,” says Sarah Pelc Graca, C.P.T., a personal trainer and nutrition coach.
If you happen to be able to use treadmill shoes for other outings—like walks, weight lifting, and running errands—even better. That’s what finding a good pair of treadmill trainers is all about. Keep reading to find the best treadmill walking shoes.
Pros
- Neutral arch support
- Stretchy plush fit
- Great for walking and running
Cons
- Some say sizing runs narrow
Both of our experts recommend this best-selling sneaker because it strikes the perfect balance among all things to look for in a good treadmill shoe: good cushioning, breathability, support, and flexibility. It’s also beloved by Prevention editors. “I put on my first pair of Brooks Ghost shoes in the summer of 2019 at the recommendation of a running shoe expert at my local specialty store,” commerce editor Samantha Jones raved in her in-depth review of the shoe. She says that she was impressed with the versatility after wearing them running thousands of miles on concrete, dirt, gravel, and even the treadmill.
What Pelc Graca says: “These shoes offer good cushioning and support for neutral runners.”

Weight | 9.1 oz |
Best for | Runners, those with normal arches |
Pros
- Great color variety
- Good traction
- Ideal arch support for neutral runners
Cons
- Some say sizing has changed from previous versions
Pelc Graca recommends these because they are “lightweight with responsive cushioning suitable for various running styles,” she says, meaning you can wear them for a jog on the treadmill or on the track. The cushioning puts a natural spring in your step, engineered mesh promotes air circulation, and the materials are durable for long-lasting wear.
What a reviewer says: “I’ve used these sneakers on a treadmill and on the road for the last six weeks. I have averaged 20 miles per week and so far, these sneakers are still feel comfortable and the tread is wearing well.”
Sizes | 5-12 |
---|---|
Weight | 8.4 oz |
Best for | Runners, weightlifters |
Pros
- APMA Seal of Acceptance
- Under 8 oz
- Great arch support
Cons
- Some prefer the earlier Clifton models
The Clifton 9 sneakers are one of the most comfortable sneakers you can get, thanks to their light, even cushioning and a curved rocker underfoot. They sit higher with a 3 mm stack height and include a removable Ortholite insole, all while remaining super lightweight.
Gold recommends these sneakers; plus, the style is backed with the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance (APMA). This seal is only awarded to apparel and shoes that have been reviewed by a team of podiatrists to confirm the item fosters foot health.
What a reviewer says: “I mean it when I say, these changed my life. Now I'm looking for fun colors. I'm thrilled to have the ability to walk further, want to get out more, and hopefully get back into walking to loose this weight.”

Pros
- PureGEL technology cushioning
- Outsole provides traction and additional cushioning
- Lean-back heel design prevents blisters
Cons
- Some say they could feel more secure
Pelc Graca says the Gel-Cumulus “provides reliable cushioning and a comfortable fit.” Its cushioning recognition is explained in its name—it’s made of gel, making it both supportive, shock absorbent, and responsive, like your favorite memory foam mattress.
The gel is strategically positioned in the midsole to help create softer landings and a more energized toe-off during your training, per the brand.
What a reviewer says: “Bouncy. I love these! Very comfortable and great for running on my treadmill. And I LOVE the color.”
Sizes | 5-12 |
---|---|
Weight | 7.8 oz |
Best for | Those who need extra support or help with pacing |
Pros
- Lots of cushioning
- Lightweight upper
- Available in lots of colors
Cons
- May have a break-in period
There’s a reason Jennifer Garner is “devoted” to this shoe, and why our experts recommend it. It’s great for running long distances safely on and off the treadmill thanks to its signature GuideRails technology, a support system designed to protect your feet and knees.
The GuideRails offer padding on the inside and outside of the edges of the heel and sole that helps prevent your foot from rolling inward or your heel from shifting outward as you run. This aids in keeping your knee, a very injury-prone part of your body, in line with each step.
What a reviewer says: “This is my second pair of Brooks Glycerin 20 sneakers. I wear them on the treadmill and also for strength training classes. They are very comfortable and also offer great support. No break-in time required. I had to size up a half size and they fit perfectly. Highly recommend.”
Sizes | 5-12 |
---|---|
Weight | 19 oz |
Best for | Long-distance runners who need extra support |
Pros
- APMA Seal of Acceptance
- Super cushioned
- Comes in wide sizing
Cons
- Only one color available
One of our favorite New Balance walking shoes, this pick is stylish and practical—ideal for low-impact activities, general everyday wear, and treadmill walking. That’s why Gold recommends them.
As opposed to mesh, the upper material is made of well-ventilated leather and provides a snug, comfortable fit. Plus, the foam midsole provides excellent cushioning and comfort with walking, Anne M. Sharkey, D.P.M., board-certified podiatrist at North Austin Foot & Ankle Institute previously told Prevention.
What a reviewer says: “Feels like walking on a pillow. Very comfortable.”

How to choose the best treadmill shoes
✔️ Breathability: Air circulation is key. “Gyms and indoor spaces tend to be warmer. As we perspire with exercise, the foot can sweat,” says Gold. “A breathable shoe will help the heat escape the foot.”
✔️ Support: “A shoe that provides good support and cushioning will help with running efficiency and minimize the risk of injuries,” Gold says.
✔️ Traction: “Although treadmills provide consistent traction, a shoe with a reliable grip helps ensure stability, especially during high-intensity or speed workouts,” says Pelc Graca.
✔️ Standard running: “Be mindful that some road running shoes are designed for running on trails or in harsh conditions (for example, on snow or ice),” Pelc Graca adds. “Be sure that the pair you choose is a standard road running pair of shoes.”
Can you wear road running shoes on a treadmill?
“Yes, you can wear most road running shoes on a treadmill,” Graca says. “Road running shoes are designed to provide support, cushioning, and durability for running on hard surfaces, which makes them suitable for treadmill running as well. Treadmills have a smooth and even surface similar to roads or pavements, so the shoes you use for road running should perform well.”
Even so, it’s important to wear a quality pair on the belt. Gold explains that this is because “you must have good foot control when you move from walking to running, increased incline, or downhill running.” If you don’t, Gold says you can be at risk for ankle, knee, hip, and lower back injuries.
